About us Waste - and the need to keep it out of landfill - is an increasingly pressing environmental and political issue in the UK. For companies disposing of waste glass, the issue has become even more pressing following a High Court ruling in 2002 under the Producer Responsibility (Packaging Waste) Regulations 1997. The ruling stipulates that pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants with a turnover of £2 million or more are 'sellers' rather than 'end users' of packaging if they dispose of more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year. One implication of this is that they are now required to be involved in the recycling of the equivalent of 48% of their waste glass bottles. Established in 2001, Glass Compaction Services (GCS) provides a simple but effective solution to the problem of disposing of waste glass in relatively significant quantities from individual premises. Crushing waste glass bottles at source enables optimum collection efficiency, delivering the economies of scale necessary for recycling to be viable. Waste producers, waste management companies, local authorities and the environment all benefit. GCS' Silipaktor™ crushes waste glass containers into unique steel wheelie bins capable of holding 300kgs of cullet that can be pushed by one person and are easily lifted and emptied by standard hydraulic equipment. No special vehicles or modifications are necessary. There have been, and are, other glass crushers on the market, but the Silipaktor™ differs from conventional glass crushers in two fundamental ways:
